Graduate Record Examination: Eligibility, Pattern and Syllabus

The GRE or Graduate Record Examination is conducted by ETS and is the standardized test for taking admission in various graduate schools in different English speaking countries especially USA. Every year more than 1, 00,000 students appear in GRE at 700 test centers across the world. Scores of the examination are considered by most of the top level graduate schools for providing admissions in master’s courses like MBA, MS, MEM or doctoral degree. Over the years, it has gone through several changes and its latest avatar is called GRE revised General Test.

Eligibility: There is no specific eligibility condition for appearing in the examination. Students can take examination irrespective of their age and qualification. However, there may be a fixed age and qualification set-up by the universities which accept GRE scores. You need to possess a valid passport as a proof of identity. In India, you will have to get your original password showing clearly your name, photograph and other details during the time of examination.

GRE Dates: There is no specific date for taking GRE in India. You can appear in the examination anytime by making an appointment with your closest GRE center. But during the peak months i.e. from August to December, it makes it difficult to take the appointment in your chosen exam center. It makes it imperative for you to plan your exam preparation and dates in advance.

GRE Centers in India: GRE in India is conducted by Prometric network and other independent teams in the cities like Allahabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Cochin, Gandhinagar, Dehradun, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Indore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nashik, Gwalior, Nizamabad, New Delhi, Patna, Trivandrum, Pune, Vadodara and Vijayawada. All of these may not be able to computerized tests some may offer paper-based tests.

GRE Pattern and Syllabus: GRE is offered into formats namely GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test. The syllabus for both the tests is different. While GRE General Test focuses on testing a candidate’s quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, verbal reasoning, and analytical writing skills, GRE Subject Test focuses on testing subject-particular knowledge of a candidate. GRE Subject Test can be taken for Biology, Chemistry, Literature in English, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology.

GRE Registration: For registration in GRE, students have to create “My GRE Account”. Students can register in GRE general test in 4 ways Mail, Phone, Fax, and Online. But for GRE Subject Test students can register through Online and Mail only.
GRE Fees: The registration to appear in GRE is $95 and ETS is now willing to be flexible with the exam takers who can prove their monetary hardship. If you want to change your exam center then you have to pay extra charges of $50. The GRE fees in Indian currency is Rs. 12,000/-.
